Insadong With My Co-Teacher and Her Friend

This is taken at an exhibit made to look like a late 1920s Korean cafe

The one in blue is my co-teacher and the one with the brown jacket is her friend.  Her friend does not speak English well.

On Sunday afternoon I went to Insadong (an area of Seoul that has lots of crafts for sale) with my co-teacher and one of her best friends.  We walked around a bit, and then we went to a traditional Korean restaurant, which had a wooden interior, similar to Shogun restaurant in Santa Rosa.

In Korea, the food is served on plenty of small shared dishes, similar to the way that food is served at many Chinese restaurants.  I was able to try bulgogi (a kind of salty beef), some fish, some spicy pork, as well as some vegetables.  Someone at another table ordered a dish that smells like feet, and at first I thought that I had bad body odor, but then my co-teacher pointed out what it was.  Fortunately it was for a table in another part of the restaurant, because it is really smelly.

Afterwards, we had some coffee in a nice part of Seoul before visiting a museum next to a palace.  Then I went to Costco and had some of the best American pizza in Korea. (Which is kind of like trying to find the best surfer in Kansas)

This week the Principal asked me to have lunch with her, the vice principal, and the school administrator, and they told me that they are totally satisfied with me as a teacher and that they like my teaching style.  The VP was impressed with the mock trial of Balloon Boy's parents.  The Principal was so happy, that she decided to to send my co-teacher and I  on a tour of Seoul and a Korean folk village at the beginning of next month.  They also said that maybe the Administrator can move me to a nicer apartment.

  1. What a great adventure you are having, Brian. I look forward to reading more about your teaching career in Korea soon. Take good care of yourself. Aunt Kim.
